Additionally, the hotel’s extensive grounds make it an idealistic getaway for couples to relax in royalty, just like Kings and Queens of yore!
Spread over 350 acres of land in western Ireland, Ashford is one of Ireland’s oldest castles, dating back to 1228. Initially founded by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family, it would pass on to Sir Richard Bingham in 1589, the Browne family in 1717 and was later purchased by the Guinness family of stout fame in 1852. It was during this time that Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness extended the Ashford estate to 26,000 acres, building new roads and planting thousands of trees. It officially opened as a hotel in 1939, after it was bought by Noel Huggard. It is currently owned by Red Carnation Hotels and was voted as the best hotel of the year at the annual 2015 Virtuoso Award.
