In India’s maximum city, everyone is looking for a change of scene. And with 18 km of coastline you’d think the view of the sea would be key! But, beachfront bars are so blah. Mumbai is always ready for something new. And the nightlife has now shifted off land on to the sea. The newest, most happening party is rocking on the deck of the ARK, a boat anchored off the sea link in Bandra.
The concept is simple: Feel the splash of sea spray and the warm breeze while the glittery lights of Mumbai’s high rise towers twinkle beyond the beautifully lit cables of the Sea Link. Raise a toast, eat a good meal, but mostly give in to the feeling of being out at sea.
The Real Deal
The boat is big, make no mistake. The restaurant and deck can seat 100 diners, and the fare is Italian and European. Reservations are a must.
To get to the Ark a small speedboat ferries passengers (just like the movies) to the boat, which is anchored about 12 minutes away. After that, the boat sets off on a small circuit, heading nearly 2 km out to sea, even passing directly under the sea link.
The boat has the sit-down restaurant, of course, along with a deck bar, private dining rooms, and three suites. The food is really not the focus, so the fare is pretty standard with some Lebanese and Mexican dishes mixed in with predictable plates of pasta, chicken, fries, bruschetta and tarts. Being Bombay, of course there are also Jain versions of several items. Cocktails and mocktails are available in the restaurant as well as the bar.
Saturday nights are for “Floating Souls”. When the dinner guests clear out, the boat comes alive with a party for 150 exclusive people who are welcome by invitation only. International DJ’s hit the decks (both kinds) and you can dance the night away with the wind in your hair.
Thursdays are often Latin nights, but these things get shuffled around so check out their social media feed for upcoming themes and you could possibly wrangle an invite.
The cost of entry depends on the time you go (it’s cheaper earlier in the evening) and the night, of course, but do expect your wallet to be quite a bit lighter by the end.
The boat casts off seven nights a week though and it’s a great place for a special date or celebration.
Clearly, the view is the biggest draw and we predict lots of selfie moments.
