Can you imagine spending your vacation in an Igloo, witnessing the beautiful Northern Lights while enjoying a stay in the Arctic Circle? Well, with Hotel Kakslauttanen, you can actually enjoy this one of a kind hospitality experience. It is home to an igloo village that boasts of both snow and glass igloos where you can sleep and spend an exclusive holiday. If you choose to spend a night in one of their glass igloos, you’ll be able to experience a unique and fascinating view of the Northern Lights. With it also being home to the world’s largest snow restaurant, visiting Hotel Kakslauttanen definitely needs to be on your bucket list.
Located in Finland, the story behind Hotel Kakslauttanen’s origin is as unique as the hotel itself. It dates back to the summer of 1973 when Jussi (the founder and owner of Hotel Kakslauttanen) was on a fishing trip in Utsjoki, Finaland. While making his way back from the trip, his car suddenly ran out of fuel. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, he had no choice but to set up camp right there. As fate would have it, this place was called Kakslauttanen. Since he loved the experience of camping at Kakslauttanen, Jussi decided to spend his entire next summer there in a tent. The next year, he decided to set up a small cabin there that also acted as a cafe for passer-bys. As years went by, this little cabin started expanding and growing and, some 40 years later, is considered to be one of the best hotels in Norway.
If you’re interested in witnessing the fascinating Northern Lights through Hotel Kakslauttanen, here’s a heads up! Firstly, it’s important to know that the Northern Lights are visible on roughly 200 nights a year, between late August and early April. Secondly, as there are around 20 glass igloos and 60 snow igloos at Kakslauttanen, getting a reservation for one of their glass igloos is advisable.
You’d be happy to know that each of the glass igloos comes equipped with thermal glass walls and ceilings, making sure that the temperatures inside always remain warm and cosy at night. Additionally, the glass of these igloos contains a frost preventative that ensures crystal clear panoramic views of the Northern Lights even when temperatures outside drop to -22 degrees.
Other features and services at Hotel Kakslauttanen include log cabins, a seasonal ice bar, a smoke sauna, reindeer safaris, husky safaris, ice fishing and ski trips. Keeping up with today’s times, each of the rooms at Kakslauttanen comes equipped with free Wi-Fi.
Although it might not look like it, reaching Hotel Kakslauttanen is actually pretty easy.
